A Meeting of the Seasons: The Art of the Wagashi We Serve

Hello, this is Denei.

In our tours, we serve warm matcha and seasonal wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) following our Zazen or Shodo sessions. These sweets are more than just a treat; they are a curated selection of masterpieces that we hand-pick from Kyoto’s finest confectioneries to match the fleeting beauty of the current season.

Today, we would like to share the story and the craftsmanship behind these delicate sweets.

Art for the Five Senses

Wagashi is often described as “an art for the five senses.” Beyond the taste, you experience the visual beauty reflecting seasonal flowers, the tactile sensation of the wooden pick sliding through the sweet, the subtle aroma of high-quality red beans, and even the auditory pleasure of hearing the poetic name (Kamei) given to each creation.

Because these designs change every month—and sometimes every two weeks—the sweet you enjoy during your tour is a “once-in-a-lifetime” encounter that will never be exactly the same again.

Three Iconic Confectioneries We Trust

To ensure the highest quality, Denei sources its sweets from three renowned Kyoto establishments that balance tradition with modern sensibility.

  • Shioyoshiken: Located in the Nishijin textile district, this prestigious shop represents the pinnacle of Kyoto craftsmanship. Their sweets are known for their refined elegance and a texture that melts effortlessly on the tongue.
  • Senbon Tamajuken: A celebrated confectionery with deep ties to Myoshinji Temple. Their sweets possess a dignified simplicity that resonates with the spirit of Zen, making them the perfect companion to a meditation session.
  • Itotatsu: A shop that has gained significant attention for the creative vision of its young master artisan. While rooted in traditional techniques, their designs often feature modern playfulness and charm, offering a fresh perspective on the world of wagashi.

Paired with Stone-Ground Matcha

To complement these sweets, we serve Uji Matcha that has been meticulously ground using a traditional stone mill.

By grinding the tea leaves slowly with stone, we prevent heat friction from damaging the delicate leaves, preserving the vibrant green color and the deep, roasted aroma. The mellow and rich flavor of this matcha perfectly balances the subtle sweetness of the wagashi, leading you into a state of deep relaxation.
