The Story Behind

Hi, this is Denei. We would like to share the story behind our tour. Let’s check each topics.

About Myoushinji Temple and Jyusyou-in

Myoshinji Temple in Hanazono, Kyoto, is one of Japan’s largest Zen temple complexes, encompassing 46 sub-temples. Its sprawling grounds are lined with magnificent buildings in a layout so imposing it is famously known as the “Face of Myoshinji,” exuding an atmosphere of profound serenity.

One of these sub-temples is Jusei-in, established by the warlord Ishida Mitsunari as a mortuary temple for his father. This site holds deep ties to his clan; before Mitsunari’s defeat in the Battle of Sekigahara—the conflict that divided Japan—the temple grounds were once four times their current size.

Chief Monk Nishida-san
Eitetsu Nishida is the 16th generation abbot, previously worked as a national public servant for 10 years before becoming a monk. Despite his rigorous three-and-a-half-year training, he is known for his cheerful personality and love for animals.

About Our Tea

We offer a cup of roasted green tea (hojicha) before Zazen and matcha afterward (selections may vary).

Our hojicha is typically sourced from Shiga Prefecture, home to Lake Biwa—Japan’s largest lake, located right next to Kyoto—while our matcha is authentic Kyoto tea. Guided by our commitment to providing only the finest quality, we use stone-ground matcha. By grinding the leaves slowly with a traditional stone mill, the tea is protected from heat damage, resulting in a remarkably mellow and profound flavor.

Please enjoy it alongside a selection of seasonal Japanese sweets!

Seasonal Wagashi(Japanese Traditional Sweets)
Japanese confectionery, or Wagashi, is a “feast for the five senses” crafted from plant-based ingredients like Azuki beans and rice. Each piece reflects the fleeting beauty of the four seasons through delicate shapes and poetic names.

Traditionally served with Matcha, the sweetness perfectly balances the tea’s bitterness. Enjoy this edible art that captures the essence of Japanese hospitality. At Denei, we carefully select Wagashi from a wide variety of options, choosing only those that we find truly delicious in taste and exquisite in beauty.

Denei’s tours are filled with countless details and hidden stories that we simply cannot capture in words. We invite you to come and experience them for yourself. We look forward to welcoming you soon!
