The Story Behind

Hi, this is Denei. We would like to share the story behind our tour. Let’s check each topics.

About Tafuku-in
Tafuku-in is an external sub-temple of the Myoshinji Zen complex, established over 540 years ago in 1482 (the 14th year of the Bunmei era).
It is a small, quiet temple nestled within a residential neighborhood just south of Ryoan-ji, the temple world-famous for its Zen rock garden. Though it is typically not open to the public, it remains a hidden gem that preserves centuries of history and a peaceful atmosphere.
How this tour started
The origins of this tour trace back to a touching moment when the head priest spontaneously offered a prayer for a honeymooning couple’s safe childbirth. Moved by this sincere act of prayer, we created a unique experience that combines Shabutsu (tracing Buddhist images) with a traditional ceremony.
Participants choose one of four Buddhist drawings to trace mindfully before writing a wish for someone else. This time spent with the priest is more than just sightseeing; it is a gateway to the depths of Japanese culture. By connecting with these deities here, the way you perceive Buddhist statues at other temples will transform into something much more personal and profound.

Buddhist Image Tracing
Choose from four distinct Buddhist deities—Shaka Nyorai, Amida Nyorai, Fudo Myo-o, or Jizo Bosatsu—each offering different spiritual blessings.
As you begin tracing the sacred lines, you may initially feel a sense of nervousness about your technique. However, as your brush moves, the tension gradually melts away, and your breathing falls into a natural rhythm. You will find yourself immersed in a soothing state of mindfulness, experiencing the profound comfort that comes from complete concentration on a single stroke.
Denei’s tours are filled with countless details and hidden stories that we simply cannot capture in words. We invite you to come and experience them for yourself. We look forward to welcoming you soon!
