Tour Flow
Here is the typical flow of our Japanese calligraphy experience at Jyusho-in Temple. The order and timing may vary slightly depending on the day.
Your guide will meet you at Myoshinji North Gate and walk with you to Jyusho-in Temple.
Along the way, learn about Myoshinji, the history of Jyusho-in, and what to expect during the experience. Feel free to ask questions and enjoy the conversation as you walk.
Upon arrival, leave your belongings in the designated area and take your seat in the tatami room.
Take a moment to settle into the quiet surroundings before the calligraphy experience begins.
The head priest will introduce shodo, the Japanese art of calligraphy, and explain the brushes, ink, and basic techniques used to write kanji.
You will also learn about the meanings of a wide selection of characters available to choose from. English interpretation will be provided throughout the explanation.
Choose a kanji character that interests you from the selection provided and begin practicing. Take your time as the head priest offers guidance on brush movement, balance, and form. Explore the character at your own pace as you become more comfortable using the brush.
When you feel ready, take a moment to settle your breathing. Then, write your chosen character on a traditional shikishi calligraphy board to create your final piece.
To complete the piece, the head priest will ask your name and choose kanji to represent it. He will write this personalized name onto your work and finish it with his traditional seal.
Your completed calligraphy will then be placed in a decorative hanging scroll, ready to display on a wall and take home. As the experience comes to a close, enjoy a relaxed conversation with the head priest and your guide.
